Gardenia jasminoides or Cape Jasmine is one of the most enticing, tropical houseplants. In Northern Ohio, Gardenias can be enjoyed year-round, indoors during the winter months and outdoors typically mid-May to mid-October.

Gardenias are known to be an advanced level tropical plant, but with the right care and attention to detail they will bloom beautifully and provide wonderful fragrance throughout the season.

Light | Grow in part shade, with 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Eastern exposure with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.

Water | Keep consistently moist, but never soggy. Avoid letting the root base dry out completely as gardenias don’t often recover well from drought stress. At the same time, ensure good drainage and do not allow roots to sit in standing water.

Temperature | Gardenias are tropical plants but appreciate shade in the heat of summer. Their ideal daytime temperature range is 70-80ºF with nighttime temperatures around 60ºF. This nighttime temperature drop is essential for healthy bud development and reliable blooming.

Indoors & Out

Gardenias can be grown outdoors in part shade from late spring through early fall in Northeast Ohio. After they’ve experienced 1-2 light fall frosts, bring them back indoors and place them in a bright room for winter. In early spring, slowly transition the plant outdoors over the course of 7-14 days, starting under a tree in a shady, proteted area, then gradually moving out into more direct sunlight.
