Winter Combo Planter

Grab some bunches of mixed evergreens in different colors and textures. Cut some dried flower stems off your hydrangea, plus some branches from deciduous holly (a.k.a. Winterberry). Purchase or find an outdoor bow. With this simple list of supplies, and some clean, sharp pruners, you can change your summer/fall planters into lasting winter arrangements in just minutes!

Getting Started

Evergreen Stems & Branches

Begin by using clean pruners to cut an assortment evergreen stems and branches from your own backyard. You can also purchase fresh-cut greens from any Petitti location.

Next, separate your evergreen branches into piles of thrillers, spillers, and fillers.

  • Sturdy, straight fir and spruce tips make excellent thrillers.
  • Bushy juniper, boxwood, and holly make wonderful fillers.
  • The soft, more pliable, or weeping, branches of pine, cypress, and incense cedar make spillers that soften the look.

Finishing Touches

Berries & Bows

Your final adornments can be colorful berries, dried flowers, pinecones, and other natural or artificial accents that add color and texture to the arrangement. And don’t forget your bow!

Pro Tip: For our arrangement, we trimmed winterberry stems and dried, panicle Hydrangea stems from the backyard to add color and texture. The glowing red bow was pre-wired onto a wooden stake and placed at the center front of the container, echoing the brilliant red of the winterberry and providing some holiday flare.

Fresh-Cut Greens

Tips & Tricks

  • Always make fresh, diagonal cuts on the branches before arranging so they can absorb moisture and remain green longer.
  • Spray cut evergreens with Wilt-Stop® before arranging; it seals moisture into the branches.
  • Keep the soil moist in the container throughout the winter.
  • Raise the container up to make sure its drainage holes don’t get backed by ice, which can cause cracking and breakage.
  • Shop Petitti’s for fresh-cut greens and berry bundles, if not available to you at home.
