Changing the Color of Hydrangeas

Pink or Blue

How to Change the Color

Only two types of Hydrangea are changeable in terms of bloom color, which is achieved by manipulating soil pH – varieties in the Bigleaf (H. macrophylla) and Mountain (H. serrata) families! When attempting to change the color of hydrangeas, remember color intensity will depend on the variety plus time & consistency of treatment. Pastel pinks will turn pastel blue or lavender, and vice versa. Deep, dramatic pinks will change to a deep, dramatic blue-purple, and vice versa.

As you experiment with the soil pH around your own hydrangeas, remember that patience is key. With a few simple adjustments to soil pH, mindful pruning techniques, and proper watering practices, the reward of beautiful blue or pink hydrangea blooms awaits. Happy gardening!
