About the Japanese Blood Grass
This short, upright, clumping grass produces bright green leaves with true, scarlet red tips about half way up the foliage. An excellent grass for sunny, front borders, Asian gardens, and patio containers. It rarely produces flowers/seed heads like other ornamental grasses, and may spread by underground runners. Care Notes
Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible early spring. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary. This grass spreads by runners, but not aggressively, and can be controlled by digging to remove parts.
