Campsis radicans

trumpet vine

About the Trumpet Vine

This classic, vigorous, easy to grow climbing vine with clusters of intense, burnt orange to brick red trumpet-shaped flowers are produced in abundance mid-summer. Irresistable to hummingbirds and makes a superb covering for fences, arbors or walls as a natural screen or windbreak. A native plant to Ohio, but can become a very aggressive grower, prune, dig or spray to control as needed.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to dry, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Prune in late winter/early spring before new growth begins. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Plant in a container to discourage aggressive spreading.
