Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 27

Radio Show Recap

This Week in the Lawn & Garden

  • Feeding the Lawn | Fall is the most important lawn food application of the entire year. Apply Scotts® Step® 4 or the organic alternative Espoma® Fall Winterizer now to help the lawn recover from summer and strengthen roots for winter. Apply to a dry lawn and water it in. WATCH September Lawn Care
  • Seeding in September | September is the best month in NE Ohio to patch & repair, overseed, or re-seed a brand new lawn from scratch. Get rid of weeds, prepare the soil, and choose a quality seed. Apply the seed, Lightning Lime™, and a starter fertilizer, according to the recommended process. READ Seeding the Lawn
  • Planting Spring-Blooming Bulbs | Also known as Fall Bulbs. For the best display, choose an assortment of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, etc., a mix of early, mid, and late season bloomers so you can enjoy a progression of blooms. Dig a bowl 18″ wide x 6″ deep and place all the bulbs in it. Add Bulb-tone® for food, Soil Perfector™ to keep rodents away, and cover with a blend of ground soil & fresh planting mix. HOW to Plant Fall Bulbs
  • Creating a Bug Barrier | Stinkbugs & others are showing up on exterior walls & windows, as they attempt to overwinter in houses. Seal up cracks & crevices, and use Ortho® Home Defense® to treat the perimeter. SHOP Ortho® Home Defense®
  • Protecting Young Trees | Deer will soon be rubbing their antlers on small caliper trees, especially new trees, which can take off the bark and injure (even kill) the tree. Protect your trees with Treekote® vinyl tree wraps and spray with Plantskydd®. This will also prevent sun scald and cracks sometimes caused by the damaging NE Ohio winter freeze-and-thaw cycles.
  • Drenching for Insects | If your magnolias, evergreens, or other trees & shrubs have been plagued by insects that are tough to treat with topical sprays (e.g. scale, bagworm, tent caterpillar, pine tip/pine shoot moths & more), fall is a great time to drench the base of the trees & shrubs with Bonide® ANNUAL® Tree & Shrub Insect Control. It’s a systemic control that’s taken in through the roots and provides protection against waves of major insect problems this fall through next spring. SHOP Insect Drench
  • Setting Christmas Cactus Buds | Take your indoor Christmas Cactus plants outside, and leave them out until October 25th. They need a good 35 days of cooling to help them set buds. This practice will multiply the number of buds & blooms you will have to enjoy for the holiday season. READ Christmas Cactus Care
