Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 20

Radio Show Recap

This week in your lawn & garden…

  • Watering through the Season | Rainfall has been light, taking a toll on plants. Make sure your lawn, gardens, and especially newly planted trees & shrubs are getting a good soaking of 1″ of water each week, whether by rainfall or irrigation. Employ rain gauges to help monitor rainfall. A great to learn how long it takes to administer 1″ of water through sprinklers/other is to place a pie plate outdoors and see how long it takes to fill. • Maintaining Mulch | Apply 2″ of mulch around plants to maintain moisture, protect plant roots, and help keep weeds down. Leave some space around the immediate base of plants without mulch to prevent harboring insects. Angelo recommends pine mulch, which breaks down over time and contributes organic matter back into the soil. SHOP Mulches
  • Repelling Rodents | Apply Repels-All® granules every 4-5 weeks to help keep chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and groundhogs from burrowing. Apply MoleMax® for mole & vole problems, making sure to water it in well because that’s what activates it. SHOP Animal Controls
  • Deterring Deer | Deer are browsing plants now, including some considered to be resistant. Sprinkle Plantskydd® granules around any young, emerging plants, and mist all others you wish to protect with Plantskydd® spray. READ Deer Resistant Gardening
  • Preventing Mosquitoes | Mosquitoes are pretty prevalent right now, breeding rapidly in the favorable conditions. Dump standing water from saucers, and clean & replace birdbath water weekly to keep it fresh. Kill larvae in a safe, non-toxic way by placing Mosquito Beater® Water Soluble Pouches in birdbaths, fountains & ponds. Use the granular or spray versions to repel mosquitoes around the patio 2-3 weeks at a time. SHOP Mosquito Beater®
  • Eliminating Japanese Beetles | Pick them from plants & drown them in soapy water, or squish them. You can also spray them with Neem Max or insecticidal soaps, or Eight®, and/or place beetle traps at the back of your yard. Apply Scotts® GrubEx® to your lawn now to prevent the eggs being laid from emerging as next year’s adults. READ Battling The Beetles
  • Controlling Lanternflies | Spotted lanternflies are in their nymph phase, appearing as black with white polka dots, and they’re beginning to show some red markings as they mature. They’re fast, but you can try spraying them with Neem Max or insecticidal soaps. Some birds are feeding on them, as well. SHOP Insect Controls
