Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 13

Radio Show Recap

This Week in Your Lawn & Garden

  • Renovating the Lawn | June is turning out to be a good month (this year) to renovate the lawn. To over-seed: Mow low to about 1″, rent a de-thatcher, sink its blades 3/4″ deep, run it both ways, and clean up the debris. Then, all at the same time, apply your grass seed, Lightning Lime™, fertilizer (Scotts® Step 1 for Seeding), and GrubEx® (if grubs are a problem), and water it in. READ Seeding the Lawn
  • Weeding & Feeding | If you haven’t already, apply Scotts® Step® 2 or “weed & feed” product early in the morning when dew is still on the grass blades (for best results). Unless we have sufficient rainfall from Mother Nature, water your lawn at a rate of 1″ per week, applying a 1/2 inch at a time a couple days apart. Early morning is best. WATCH Step 2 Lawn Care
  • Noticing Nutsedge | Light green & shiny, it emerges in sets of 3 leaves from the center, and grows twice as fast as the lawn. Control it without hurting the lawn by applying Bonide® Sedge Ender® spray. It’s tough to kill otherwise, and pulling causes it to persist through the spreading of dropped bulblets. SHOP Sedge Ender
  • Planting in Containers | Start your container gardens right by following Angeo’s 6 Steps for Success planting guide. Start with fresh Petitti planting mix, and incorporate Sweet Peet® as well as Bio-tone® starter fertilizer. This will help plants root and establish well. Fertilize with Osmocote® every 6 weeks. • Triggering Bloom Cycles | If your Macrophylla Hydrangea, Wisteria, Lilac, or other flowering shrubs have fallen out of bloom in recent years, now is a good time to apply Triple Phosphate. Punch holes about 4-5″ deep around the root system, and fill them with the amendment. It will boost flower formation. SHOP Triple Phosphate
  • Stopping Holes in Hostas | Holes in the foliage of your Hosta are caused by slugs. Control them by sprinkling Slug Magic® pellets onto the soil surrounding your Hosta plants. You can also place citrus rinds around the plants, which will attract the slugs away from the plant and you can then dispose of them. SHOP Slug Magic
