Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 12

Radio Show Recap

This week in your lawn & garden —

  • Pruning Spring Bloomers | June is the time to hard prune for size & shape any spring-flowering shrubs that have completed their bloom cycles: Azalea, Rhododendron, Purple Plum Bush, Forsythia, Lilac, Variegated Dogwood, and older, large varieties of Butterfly Bush.
  • Weeding & Feeding | It’s time to apply “weed & feed” lawn products such as Scotts® Step® 2. Apply early in the morning when dew is still on the grass blades for best results (the weed control needs to stick to the foliage), and make sure to pick a day with no rain in the forecast. WATCH Step 2 Lawn Care
  • Fertilizing Plants | If you haven’t yet this spring, you can still feed evergreen trees & shrubs with Holly-tone® and Iron-tone®. Everything else that’s deciduous, feed with Plant-tone® and Iron-tone®. Annuals will benefit from Osmocote® every 4-6 weeks. SHOP Plant Foods
  • Protecting Roses | Apply Bonide® Rose Shield™ Systemic Drench for pest & disease control. Repeat once 6-8 weeks from now, and you should be set for the season. This is especially important for more hybrid tea and other advanced care type roses. SHOP Rose Drench
  • Turning Hydrangeas Blue/Pink | For Bigleaf Hydrangea (H. macrophylla) varieties, if you haven’t done so already, apply Aluminum Sulfate to the plants you’d like to see bloom blue. To keep them pink, apply Lightning Lime®. Repeat the application when buds are the size of a quarter. Additionally, you can apply Triple Phosphate to any flowering shrubs that have been lackluster bloomers for you. WATCH Changing Color
  • Stopping Holes in Hostas | Holes in the foliage of your Hosta are caused by slugs. Control them by sprinkling Slug Magic® pellets onto the soil surrounding your Hosta plants. You can also place citrus rinds around the plants, which will attract the slugs away from the plant and you can then dispose of them. SHOP Slug Magic®
  • Preventing Leaf Diseases | Start routinely spraying Bonide® Copper Fungicide now (before the hot weather starts) on Clematis, tall Garden Phlox, Roses, Bee Balm, Peony, and other susceptible plants to prevent the onset of powdery mildew & other fungal issues. It is easier to prevent by spraying ahead than it is to control the problem once it shows up. SHOP Copper Fungicide
  • Best Annuals | Angelo listed the annuals he recommends most for easy, amazing color spring to fall frost…
    Begonias | Calibrachoas (mini petunias) | Coleus | Double Impatiens | Dipladenia | Lantanas | New Guinea Impateins | SunPatiens® | Supertunias® (petunia series)
