Leontopodium alpinum

edelweiss

About the Edelweiss

This dainty garden classic undoubtedly popularized by ‘The Sound of Music’ possesses silvery white, woolly foliage and unusual star-like flower heads. Native to the Alps, this plant grows best in sunny, but cool alpine or rock gardens. Combine with English daisies, pasque flower and creeping phlox.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, alkaline soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer after deadheading or shearing to encourage new blooms. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary. Propagation prohibited.
