Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 03

Radio Show Recap

Noelle filled in for Angelo on this first full day of spring, while he recovered from the fluctuating spring temperatures we’re all experiencing!

This week in your lawn & garden:

  • Planting Spring Bloomers | Early spring is a great opportunity to plant Pansies & Violas, Lenten Roses, Blooming Bulbs, Hens & Chicks, and Saxifrage in containers and in the ground. All add early color and can take the roller-coaster weather that is springtime in Northeast Ohio.
  • Preventing Crabgrass | Apply Scotts® Step® 1 to prevent the germination of annual crabgrass while feeding the lawn. If you’re planning to overseed with grass seed this spring, be sure to choose Step 1 “for seeding” so you don’t suppress the lawn seed while addressing the weed seed. *You can also apply Lighting Lime™ at the same time as Step 1.
  • Feeding the Lawn Organically | Apply Espoma Organic’s Turf-tone® All Season Lawn Food or Turf-tone® Weed Preventer for an all-natural approach that’s safe for people and pets.
  • Eliminating Moss | Apply Lightning Lime™ to raise soil pH and make is less hospitable for moss. Apply Moss Max® to kill existing moss, then rake out the blackened remnants.
  • Seeding the Lawn | Take the necessary steps in April to patch & repair, overseed for thickening, or completely re-seed a new lawn.
  • Addressing Weeds | Spot treat weeds with Weed Beater Ultra®, which works great in temperatures fluctuating anywhere from 45-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Sharpening the Mower | Grass is about to start actively growing, so it’s a great time to sharpen the blades. Clean cuts from sharp blades are much better for the lawn than dull blades with ‘split ends’ that can encourage a messy look and pest/fungal issues. WATCH Spring Lawn Care
  • Repelling Moles & Voles | If you’re seeing raised runways or mounded tunneling in the lawn, it’s a sign of moles. If you see clean holes and snaking pathways alongside shrubs, that’s a sign of voles feeding on your plant’s roots. Apply MoleMax® per package instructions and water it in to drive both of them out. SHOP MoleMax®
  • Spraying Fruit Trees | Buds are swelling, so it’s time to spray peaches, cherries, plums, and grapes to prevent the onset of fungal diseases and insects, which negatively impact fruit development. Use Bonide® Orchard Spray with sulfur. Spray before buds break open, and pick a dry day when nighttime temperatures are above freezing. READ Fruit Treatment Schedule
  • Starting Seeds & Bulbs | It’s a good time to start seeds indoors for veggies like tomato, squash, eggplant, melon, and cucumber, plus tender bulbs like dahlia, canna, calla, and geranium. This way, they’ll be ready to transplant outside mid-May and the bulbs will be ready to flower end of May. READ Potting Tender Bulbs
  • Feeding & Re-potting Plants | March is a good time for re-potting and fertilizing houseplants. Keep turning them weekly to maintain even growth on all sides. WATCH Re-potting Houseplants
  • Fertilizing Shrubs | Feed your evergreens with Holly-tone® and Iron-tone®. Feed everything else that’s deciduous with Plant-tone® and Iron-tone®. Feed spring-blooming bulbs with Bulb-tone® as they emerge from the ground now. WATCH Spring Fertilizing
