About the Ranunculus
Ranunculus asiaticus, commonly known as Persian Buttercup, is one of the earliest spring-blooming plants available in the garden center. These beautiful bulbs produce layers of jewel-toned, peony-like blooms that instantly brighten spring containers. Flowers range from 1-4 inches wide and emerge from small, claw-like tubers, creating a full, doubled look. Lush green foliage forms classic three-lobed leaf sets — a defining characteristic of the Ranunculaceae family. As leaves mature, they become more finely fringed.
Native to the Mediterranean, Ranunculus is hardy to USDA Zone 7 (-10ºF). In our Northeast Ohio climate, it should be treated as a tender bulb. After flowering, and once the foliage goes dormant in summer, tubers can be dug, dried, and stored for replanting the following season.
Care Notes
Place in a cool northern or eastern window where it can receive bright, indirect light, but not heat. When watering, keep the plant’s soil on the dry side — they don’t tolerate sitting in water. Fertilize with Osmocote. Deadhead spent flowers for increased & prolonged bloom period. After flowering, and once the foliage goes dormant in summer, tubers can be dug, dried, and stored for replanting the following season.
