Radio Show Recap
A week of cool, rainy weather has the lawn and garden fairly soggy—but there’s still plenty to do as we gear up for spring planting season! This week, Angelo shares tips for dividing perennials, fertilizing, and managing weeds in the lawn and garden. He also shares tips for pruning popular shrubs like hydrangeas, clematis, and rhododendron. PLUS, he answers caller questions like “I have a tulip tree that needs to be pruned, should I do that now”, and “I need to thin out the honeysuckle and trumpet growing on my fence. When is the best time to do that”?
Angelo’s Gardening Tips
- This is a great time to split perennials. Dig up a clump, split it as desired, prepare soil with a 50/50 mix of existing soil and fresh planting mix and apply Bio-tone to fertilize.
- Prune panicle hydrangeas down to a 8-10″ ball
- Prune mophead hydrangeas down to the uppermost growth when you start to see new buds forming from the bare stems
- This is the last week to prune burning bush, you can cut them back hard if needed
- Prune clematis by removing dry wood with a hand pruner. Can also be cut to the ground so new, fresh growth comes up this season
- WAIT to cut back Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Mock Orange, Lilacs & Forsythia until after they’re done blooming
