About the Asparagus
Edible asparagus, Asparagus officinalis, is a long-lived, perennial vegetable that can be grown and enjoyed at home in large containers, raised beds, or in veggie gardens for 15-20 years! To grow asparagus successfully, choose your planting site carefully, and be sure to prepare the soil and maintain them according to the preferences listed below. Asparagus is a delicious, rewarding crop, but does require patience and some extra care to get started compared to the typical garden edibles grown at home.
Care Notes
Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer like Garden-tone® or Tomato-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
