At A Glance: Creating A Bird-Friendly Habitat

everything you need to know to get started

Birding is an outstanding means of experiencing nature. There’s nothing quite like the sense of peace and joy created from simply taking a moment to enjoy this soothing source of natural beauty. Looking to get started? Attract birds by creating a bird-friendly habitat, which really comes down to providing the basics of water, food, and shelter.

If you don’t have a pond or stream in close proximity, add a birdbath or other garden water feature.

Choose quality feeders free of sharp edges that are easy to fill and made to withstand the Northeast Ohio elements.

For best odds at attracting multiple species, select seed formulated to serve the nutritional needs of many feathered friends.

Include evergreens and dense shrubs in your landscape to provide shelter during harsh weather. Add heavy-bearing berry bushes to serve as an additional food source.

Grow flowering plants like sunflower, zinnia, lantana, coneflower, and coreopsis, which plentifully provide seed or nectar.

And remember, the more variety in feeders and food, the more variety of species for your enjoyment!
