Harvesting the Vegetable Garden

Modern Victory Garden

The importance of harvesting

Gardening is about the journey as much as it is the destination, but who can deny how satisfying it is to enjoy the fruits of one’s labor! By mid to late summer, the vegetable garden you started in spring will begin rewarding you with a plentiful bounty. You’ll want to harvest vegetables, herbs, and fruits when at peak maturity in order to enjoy the highest quality. Make it a routine to check your plants daily and harvest continually.

Continual harvesting promotes fresh, healthy, tasty growth through the entire growing season, so your plants don’t harden up, go to seed, and shut down early. Watch our videos below for expert advice on how to harvest your best bounty.

bringing it all together

After giving your vegetable garden a lot of TLC since early spring, it’s incredibly exciting to taste and use the fruits of your labor as the harvesting phase gets under way. Remember to harvest continually to keep your plants growing and producing all the way to fall frost. If you find yourself with a surplus at any point, consider offering them to help feed and take care of a neighbor. Or, donate your surplus harvest to your local food bank or community pantry.
